Former Patriots Safety Charged After Casino Altercation

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

By JODIE MOZDZER | Courant Staff Writer

August 4, 2008

UNCASVILLE - Tebucky S. Jones, a former safety for the New England Patriots and a Farmington resident, was arrested at Mohegan Sun early Friday after an altercation in the casino’s hotel lobby.

The fight started about 1 a.m. when Jones, 33, of 77 Ely Road, made inappropriate contact with a woman in the lobby, police said. The woman’s boyfriend, Nikolaos Papathanasiou, 24, of the Quaker Hill section of Waterford, had an argument with Jones over the contact, which escalated into a physical fight, according to the police report.

Police said Jones knocked over the female victim, who was not identified, and punched Papathanasiou in the face. A third man, Mark Chichester, 36, of New London, then punched Jones, according to police.

Jones, who is a New Britain native and played for the Patriots from 1998 to 2002, was charged with breach of peace, third-degree assault, and fourth-degree sexual assault and was released on $5,000 bail. He is due in court Aug. 21.

Chichester and Papathanasiou were each charged with breach of peace and released on $250 bail, with the same court date. Papathanasiou was treated for his injuries at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.

Jones played football for New Britain High School and then Syracuse University before being drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft. Jones played in 72 games with 36 starts for the Patriots.

Jones also played for the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins, returning to the Patriots in 2006. For the entire 2006 regular season and playoffs, Jones was on the injured list with a leg injury, according to a news release from the Patriots website. He was released from the team in 2007.

During his nine-year career, he recorded 420 career tackles (299 solo), 4.5 sacks, six interceptions for 73 yards, 41 passes defended, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 72 special teams tackles.

Jones also made headlines during 2006 and 2007 for trying to evict his mother, Maryann Jones, from the Plainville condominium he owns. Jones filed, and then withdrew, two legal complaints against Maryann Jones, accusing her of not paying the common charges for the condominium unit. In January 2007, Maryann Jones and Jones’ attorney signed an agreement that said Maryann Jones would leave the condominium by the end of February

Support for Obama in the Online Casino and Poker World

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

This might seem like a bit of an odd news headline for the online casino world. Especially since in recent years thanks to George W. Bush’s administration, politics and online casinos (at least in the U.S.) haven’t been getting along so well.

The current Republican administration brought into effect the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) which prevents American players from gambling at several major online casinos.

Now however, the Poker Players’ Alliance, a non-profit organization that aims to fight the UIGEA and has over one million members, has chosen to put its faith and trust in the Barack Obama campaign.

Another surprising bit of information, which no doubt adds to his support from the online gaming world is that Obama is a skilled poker player. He began playing poker in highs school, often with his grandfather and school mates. In 2004, Obama took part in several low-stakes, for fun games of poker during the Illinois state legislature that was designed to break up the tedious and extremely long legislative sessions!

Former players would characterize his style of play as cautious and attentive and is said to have a good poker face. Of course, Obama does not play any poker on the campaign trail.

Obama also has the support of some pretty heavy hitters in the poker world including Doyle ‘Texas Dolly’ Brunson. Brunson is a 10-tine WSOP bracelet winner, who was a republican for 74 years before switching support. Also supporting Obama is Andy Bloch, another world renowned player and part of the MIT blackjack team. Bloch also revealed Obama had support from most other poker players as well.

Online casinos hit by bot armies

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

Don’t bet against money laundering robots. Botnets are fulfilling law enforcement fears that online casinos could prove fertile ground for money laundering, according to a recent, little-noticed report by risk compliance firm Fortent.

Some are engaging in variations of an old casino scam, in which preprogrammed-to-lose bots transfer dirty money - obtained through stolen credit cards, illicit drug sales or whatnot - to a chosen winner. Others flood a room and conspire to defraud a legitimate player by leveraging the mathematical advantage inherent in knowing more of the cards. Another scam involves spamming a known player in the hopes of stealing password and account information, and then bleeding the account dry through the fraudulent games described above.

Fulltiltpoker.com apparently got hit by a botnet attack recently and refunded money to the defrauded customers. A USA Today tally last month estimated that $2.5 mil to $3.5 mil per year are laundered this way.

“We are definitely seeing activity by bot-herders in online casino games, which is something we hadn’t seen before,” Symantec security analyst Zulfikar Ramzan noted.

We’ve generally been skeptical of allegations that the online casino industry would make a good platform for widespread money laundering, primarily due to the ready-made trail left by the transactions. However, the use of botnets is more problematic, due to the fact that until recently botmasters had not been targeted by the FBI, and the actual computers involved belong to innocent third parties.

Money laundering can theoretically be accomplished through many types of transactions - for example, by selling phony merchandise on eBay and transferring the money without delivering anything at all. It’s therefore questionable just how much more susceptible cybercasinos are than other online businesses to money laundering. Risk compliance companies like Fortent or AccuitySolutions have products to push, after all. However, the fact that the US authorities have driven much of the online gambling and payment processing activity underground raises serious concerns about just how secure some of these sites are.

As of the end of 2006, Macau (a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China) has become the largest and fastest-growing gaming market in the world, and has surpassed the Las Vegas Strip in total revenues. According to statistics provided by Macau government, in 2006, Macau’s gaming revenues reached US$7 billion (MOP 56.2 billion patacas), surpassing the Las Vegas Strip gaming revenues of US$6.6 billion. Macau borders Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province of China, one of the country’s wealthiest and most developed regions and is an hour away from Hong Kong via ferry. In 2006, the number of tourists visiting Macau reached an all-time record of 22 million, an increase of 17 percent compared with 2005, of which 55%, or 12 million visitors, were from mainland China. By 2010, the number of tourists is expected to nearly double to almost 30 million visitors per year. Approximately one billion people live within a three-hour flight of Macau. With the disposable income of the average Chinese on the rise, Macau’s gaming and entertainment market is expected to grow for years to come. Macau is the only area in China where gambling is legal.

EDUCATING THE POLITICIANS

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

Online gambling portal took the initiative on Washington project

Whilst many complain about US political ignorance when it comes to the multi-faceted online gambling phenomenon, few have taken proactive steps to address the apparently yawning gap in US political education on the pastime. Not so the information portal Casino Gambling Web which has just completed a commendable initiative to better inform Congressmen.

Staff from the portal traveled to Washington DC and successfully delivered 435 information packets to every US representative in Congress on Friday last week.

The packets contained the substantial petition to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that the site has been sponsoring, together with 10 reasons why Internet gambling should be legalised, and a CD that contained all the testimony from the Financial Services Committee hearing on the regulation of Internet gambling.

Each packet was hand addressed to individual Congressmen and women and the project was titled ‘The IGREA Initiative’. The title refers to Congressman Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act which seeks to legalise and regulate online gambling in the United States (see previous Online-Casinos.com/InfoPowa reports).

“We did our part,” commented a Casino Gambling Web staffer who helped deliver the 435 packets, “Now it’s up to the 15-25 million Americans we went there to fight for to start calling their Congress people and express their support for ‘The IGREA Initiative’.”

Congressman Frank and other US politicians who believe in regulation rather than prohibition have repeatedly stressed how important it is for politicians to hear the voices of voters they represent. They have urged American online players to email or phone their political representatives to ask that they reject UIGEA and support the Frank Bill.

Superstitious slot machine play

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

I have been playing in casinos since the day after I turned 21 (some 13 years ago - eek getting old here:) and since the first time I sat down at one of those ‘one armed bandits’ I have been superstitious about what machine I play. Well maybe superstitious isnt quite the right word, maybe I should say very selective. You see, I will look at a row of machines and I usually like one over the others. Call me crazy, but I always get a hunch on which one will pay the most. But since I’m not playing all of the machines in a particular row, I could be completely full of crap about all of this! The last few times I’ve been in a casino, my so-called hunches have paid off.

We stopped at Sam’s Town in Shreveport LA a few months ago on the way home from visiting some family and I saw this one machine that just seemed to be beckoning me to play (yes more complete hooey!). So I sit down, hubby beside me, stick a twenty in the machine and about 3 spins into playing I hit the a $500 payout. So, for you non-believers, I have partially proven that my superslotsense, not to be confused with spidey-sense, may actually be true. Now, I’m not even going to tell you about the woman sitting 3 machines down from me that hit $11,000 on her machine.

So, now fast forward to last week when I was at another casino, this one on the Carnival Funship Ecstacy, I walked around and around the whole place, only about 3,000 sq feet until I found the machine that was calling my name. Well, techically it kept saying ‘HotShot’ but ya know, I am and so I sit down. Now this machine is a penny machine - cool it’ll take days to wipe out $20 in credits. Not exactly, since the machine was a 20 liner, 5 reel, with a 10 coin per line max bet. All that means is that if you really want to win the big jackpot prize, you must spend $2 on each spin. So I stick a $20 in this machine and bang, first spin is the ‘hotshot’ game where you can win additional credits. Within about 15 minutes my original money had grown into well over $300 but as i often do, i just kept spinning and saying to myself, I’ll stop when I hit the next jackpot, or when i’m broke. Luckily the latter never came and I left the casino when it closed at 3am (we were getting ready to pull into port) with slightly more than $200.

I think next time i’ll get my lucky rabbits foot at home.

Trump calls for repeal of Atlantic City casino smoking ban

Posted by admin in Uncategorized

ATLANTIC CITY - Donald Trump wrote to Mayor Bob Levy and City Council President William Marsh on Wednesday calling on the city to repeal a partial casino smoking ban that he claims is scaring away business.
In his two-page letter, Trump said gamblers are fleeing Atlantic City en masse for competing casinos in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut that don’t have smoking restrictions.

“The negative impact of the city ordinance is even more than the mere loss of a large number of smoking patrons to Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut casinos and the perhaps permanent decline in Atlantic City gaming revenue,” Trump wrote. “It also requires that each casino operator expend millions of dollars to enclose its gaming floor smoking areas with structures which will significantly obstruct the customary flow of gaming patron activity and at the same time look absolutely terrible.”

Atlantic City’s partial ban, which took effect on April 15, limits smoking to no more than 25 percent of the gaming floor at the 11 casinos. Smoking is off-limits in the remaining 75 percent of the gaming space.

Marsh said Wednesday evening he had not yet seen Trump’s letter but noted that the 75-25 smoking compromise was supported by the Casino Association of New Jersey, the gaming industry trade group that includes the three Trump casinos.

“At this point, I think the 75-25 split is very favorable,” Marsh said. “That is something that the Casino Association supported along with the majority of the casinos. So at this point, I don’t know if Mr. Trump has additional information that we don’t have.”

Levy, who also said Wednesday evening he had not yet seen Trump’s letter, stated that it would first be up to City Council to repeal the partial smoking ban. Only then would he have to decide whether to use his mayoral veto power.
